Chemistry 371
Chemical Synthesis &
Characterization

College of Charleston, Fall 2001

Instructor:  F.J. Heldrich, Ph.D.

Course Description:  A study of the chemistry of and methods for the synthesis, separation, and identification of chemical compounds.  Emphasis is given to specialized techniques involved in synthesizing organic and inorganic compounds, and to identification of compounds by spectral methods.

Attendance Policy:  Attendance to the scheduled class times is mandatory.  In addition, you will have to work in the Science Center outside of normal laboratory hours to operate departmental instrumentation, to process spectroscopic data, and to perform molecular modeling.  You may NOT do any wet chemistry or work in the laboratory room outside of the scheduled meeting times for this course.

Grade Policy:  The grade for this course will be based upon computation of the graded assignments as shown below.

   Modeling & Literature Assignment:                 15%
   Unknown Project Report:                                   15%
   Eneyne Project Report:                                       15%
   Synthetic Challenge Report I:                            15%
   Synthetic Challenge Report II:                          15%
   Laboratory Record:                                              15%
   Final Examination:                                              10-25%*

The final examination grade will automatically be used to replace a lower grade, if any, earned in one of the other assignments.
