Welcome:

This is the departmental site for information about the introductory organic chemistry lecture. This lecture course is to be taken concurrently with the first semester introductory organic chemistry laboratory course. The Chem 231 lecture is a corequisite or pre-requisite to the laboratory course.

This course is challenging to most students. Effective study skills and making a personal committment to the time necessary to learn the material is required for success. The recommended method for "reading the text" is to read it twice. The first reading should be of material that is about to be covered in the lecture. The purpose of this first reading is to familiarize yourself with terms and concepts that will be discussed or used in class. The second reading should be to understand the material. The second reading is done while working problems; as you discover you do not know how to derive an answer to a problem, you read the appropriate sections to try to understand what you need to know to work the problem. If you are unclear about a concept, uncertain about your answers, or have other concerns please visit your instructor during office hours or at another mutually convenient time. Students who take the time to get to know the organic instructor are less threatened and more likely to understand the material than are students who never visit with the instructor. So stop by, even if it is only to say hello.
